Nadel and Gussman Joins Reading Partners

Michele leaves tutor notes in her student’s folder. Prepared lesson plans make tutoring sessions easy.

In Oklahoma, 4 out of 5 fourth graders from low-income families cannot read at grade level.  This sobering statistic was a call to action for the Nadel and Gussman team to embrace Reading Partners, a national education nonprofit that works with Title I elementary schools to support students who are reading six months to two and a half years below grade level.  Reading Partners uses a one on one tutoring model that enables community volunteers to help students master basic reading skills and grow to be successful learners.

With nearly a third of our Tulsa staff  volunteering an hour or more per week to work with students at Academy Central and Hawthorne Elementary, we are determined to make a difference with our student partners. Last year, 90% of students in the program gained the skills needed to read at grade level during the school year.

You can also be a part of positively changing the trajectory of a child’s life by committing just an hour a each week.  For information on how you can become a Reading Partner, visit http://readingpartners.org/location/tulsa/

Nadel and Gussman Volunteers Aid Louisiana Flood Victims

Annie Green, Shreveport employee, was scheduled to travel to Baton Rouge to pull historical data for Nadel and Gussman from the Louisiana Office of Conservation on August 26th, but she went down a day early to help feed roughly 250 flood victims from St. Martin Parish in south central Louisiana.  Her family had helped organize the event.

Nadel and Gussman had planned to donate 40 pounds of linked sausage from Baudin’s, a local sausage kitchen, for the cookout.  When Annie’s husband, called to place the order, Baudin’s wouldn’t accept payment and donated the sausage for the event.

Thanks to Baudin’s, Annie was able to use Nadel and Gussman’s donated funds to assemble 10 cleaning care packages for flood victims, which were delivered by the local volunteer fire department.  The kits contained much-needed bleach, ant poison, laundry detergent, dishwashing liquid, all-purpose cleaner, paper towels and scrub pads.

The spirit and compassion of those people left a lasting impression on Annie and her family members.  Even though they had lost so much, they still wore smiles and expressed gratitude for any kind of assistance they were offered, no matter how big or how small.

In a prior article, we relayed the story of an abandoned bobcat kitten, Nadel, who appeared at one of the company’s wells in Claiborne Parish on June 30th.  Nadel was relocated to the Louisiana Bobcat Refuge in Eunice, which was also hard hit by flooding in August.  Ruston employee, Ricky Hurst, who originally found little Nadel, volunteered his time at the Refuge to help them recover from the flood.

NG Ruston Rescues Bobcat

NG Ruston pumper Ricky Hurst

It isn’t uncommon for our field staff to spot wildlife while making their daily checks at our well sites. It is rather unusual, however, for an animal to approach someone and affectionately begin playing as if they were long time companions.

Ruston pumper Ricky Hurst was working at a well in Claiborne Parish on June 30th when a kitten approached him and began to play. After a short time, he noticed that the kitten had a very short tail and Ricky realized he wasn’t your average domestic kitten, but was instead a baby bobcat. Hoping the bobcat would reunite with his family, Ricky finished his job and left the well for the evening.

The next morning when Ricky returned to check the well, the bobcat was still alone at the site, greeted him again and started to play. Concerned for the abandoned kitten’s survival, Ricky called into our Ruston office where our staff contacted the Louisiana Bobcat Refuge in Eunice, LA for guidance.

As a 501c3 nonprofit charity registered with the state of Louisiana, the Louisiana Bobcat Refuge is the only species specific bobcat rehabilitation center in the southeastern US that offers long-term rehabilitation. LBR specializes in singlet bobcat rehabilitation with their Abandoned Bobcat Kitten Surrogacy Program, featuring zoo retired, pet surrendered or non-releasable bobcats, Canada lynx or smaller approved exotic felids.

Under the instruction of the Refuge, Ricky brought the kitten to the office where he was dubbed ‘Nadel’. Joe and Candee Anderson further transported Nadel to Shreveport to deliver him to Dr. Gia Morgan at Wildlife Education & Rehabilitation of Louisiana for safe travels to the Refuge in Eunice.

Nadel is currently estimated to be 7 to 8 weeks old. While he is in the care of the Refuge, we look forward to updates on his progress from Executive Director Pamela Connery. The Refuge will keep Nadel approximately a year until he is ready for his documented release in the same area he was found.
